If you experience high levels of anxiety when you visit the dentist,
understanding that the feeling is quite normal might help ease your
mind. Many people have developed dental fear early in their childhood
that carries into their adult years. In today’s world, dentists are
adequately trained and have several tools that can make the dental procedures less intimidating. Here are some tips for reducing anxiety when you schedule a visit with your dentist.
Take One Step at a Time
One of the most common sources of anxiety for dental patients is the
misconception that all dental treatments that they need will happen in a
single appointment. The reality is that you can schedule as many or as
few visits as you’re comfortable with at a time. It could help to ease
your mind if you separate your examination and teeth cleaning visits,
for example, and after you’re more comfortable, you can schedule other
procedures if they are necessary. The ultimate goal is to monitor your
stress level and keep it at a minimum as much as possible.
Use Effective Distractions
Bring a stress ball with you and squeeze it whenever you feel nervous,
or take a book with you to distract your mind before your visit starts.
Listening to your favorite music is a great way to reduce your anxiety
as well.
Talk to Your Dentist
Be honest with your dentist about any fears or concerns you have. Your
dentist can work with you to ensure you’re comfortable and aware about
each step of the dental procedure.
I got here from a message on my blog. About meditation and how it helps you relax at the dentist's. Well, that might not be much use unless you've been at it for a while (but every little bit helps!), but what I'd like to say is that dentist's don't get paid enough. They should get paid like heavyweight champs. It's an awful job. Why anyone would do that, I do not know!
