Common Restorative Dentistry Procedures

Restorative dentistry is a term defined as the management of oral health problems. It is specifically aimed at restoring or replacing missing parts of the tooth structure in order restore the normal functions of the mouth. With additional education, many dentists can perform procedures of restorative dentistry. The most common restorative dentistry procedures are as follows:

  1. Dentures or false teeth– are removable teeth replacements. Depending on the situation, a dentist may recommend full or partial dentures. Dentures are made of a combination of metal attachments and a material called acrylic resin. Just like regular teeth, they require daily brushing.
  2. Dental implants– implants are small pieces made of metal made to fill the gaps caused by missing teeth. They are placed into the bone socket and then later on covered with a replacement tooth.
  3. Crowns– crowns are caps that are placed over a tooth to improve its strength and appearance. They are also used as tooth replacement in dental implants and are bonded using dental cement.
  4. Fillings– during this procedure, a dentist may repair cracks on teeth or fix decayed portion of a tooth. The fillings are made from different materials like silver amalgam, porcelain, and gold. Fillings are the most common type of restorative dentistry.

The main goal of restorative dentistry is to preserve natural teeth but whatever the cause is for the need of these procedures, one must consider factors like health issues that may affect procedure and expenses.
