Fear of Dentists: How to Overcome Dental Anxiety

It’s not only kids who have nightmares about sitting in a dentist’s chair; adults also experience dental anxiety. In fact, approximately 15 percent of Americans completely avoid going to the dentist due to this fear. As a result, many aren’t getting the dental care they deserve. Here are a few tips to help overcome your anxiety:

1.       Establish better communication with your dentist. If you are feeling anxious, you should talk about it to your dentist so that he or she can help with your uneasiness. During the procedure, you should have a communication strategy to indicate when you are feeling any pain. This should help make you feel more comfortable.

2.       Find something to distract you. Most dental offices already have television sets and radios to help keep the patient entertained during procedures. Try to focus on something like your favorite show or a catchy tune. 

3.      Sedation dentistry can be an option for those who have severe anxiety, not to mention there are always local anesthetics or numbing creams that dentists use to reduce, if not completely, eradicate pain.
