What You Should Know about Oral Cancer Screenings

Have you heard or read about oral cancer screenings, but never had this type of dental service done? If so, you should contact your dentist and schedule the procedure. With early detection, the survival rate is between 80 and 90%.

What is an Oral Cancer Screening?

When you have your dentist perform an oral cancer screening, it is often referred to as a routine recall exam. This type of examination includes a visual check for any abnormalities within the oral cavity, such as the presence of lesions or lumps. If your screening catches the oral cancer early on, it would be easier for your dentist to remove the cancer and treat the lesions.

When is an Oral Cancer Screening Done?

You can have an oral cancer screening done during a routine dental visit. Depending on your dentist, he may suggest using additional testing to determine what is causing the abnormal cells in your mouth. There is no special preparation required for an oral cancer screening.

Oral Cancer Symptoms

Even though there are specific symptoms associated with oral cancer, you can have a screening done before any of those symptoms appear. It is beneficial to get screened for oral cancer, regardless if you have any symptoms.

If you are suffering from any of the symptoms below, do not hesitate to contact your dentist immediately. The most common symptoms associated with oral cancer are:

• Difficulty chewing or swallowing food
• Ear pain
• Bleeding sores in the mouth
• Hard spots (or lumps) in the mouth
• Numbness of the tongue

Oral Cancer Detection

Studies show that only about 60% of all dental patients will get screened each year. It is important that you visit your dentist regularly and schedule an oral cancer screening.
