It’s safe to say that the main reason people seek the help of a cosmetic
dentist is to get a lovely smile, but
after getting the latter, what’s next? There’s no reason to hide those pearly whites,
so here are a few reasons why you should flash that beaming smile of yours often.
When you smile, hormonal activity in your body kicks into overdrive. Two
different types of hormones are at work here, namely endorphins and cortisol.
Endorphins are the so-called “feel good hormones,” while cortisol is the complete
opposite—it’s the “stress hormone.” Endorphin production is triggered by the movement
of facial muscles, which the brain interprets as a direct command. Endorphins are
essentially the body’s natural pain-killers, making people feel happier and less
stressed. Alongside the ramped up endorphin production, cortisol levels are drastically
reduced.
A good laugh also helps your body out in another way: promoting homeostasis.
Homeostasis is a process that keeps your body’s internal conditions stable, regardless
of what’s actually going on in your environment. For one, having a hearty laugh
promotes homeostasis by expanding the lungs and replenishing your cells’ oxygen
levels.
Lastly, smiling makes you a lot more attractive. This is practically a no-brainer.
A smile makes you appear more approachable, unlike a scowl which is more likely
to alienate people around you. A study published in the European Journal of Social
Psychology literally proves this.
