Dentistry: Providing Relief to TMJ Pain Sufferers

The temporomandibular joint is what connects the human jaw to the temporal bones on the skull directly in front of each ear. It is this joint that allows the jaw to open and close, making it easy to talk, chew, and sing. When a problem affects this joint, it is often referred to as TMD or TMJ.

Reasons for TMD

Dentists do not know for sure what causes TMD. It is believed that the symptoms are the results of problems with jaw muscles or dysfunction within the joint itself. TMD can be triggered by a jaw injury or an injury to the muscles in the head and neck. Individuals who grind their teeth, have arthritis in their jaw, or experience stress that causes them to tighten their facial muscles and clench their teeth often may experience TMD symptoms as well.

What Are TMD Symptoms?

Symptoms of TMD include pain and tenderness in the area around the jaw, neck, and shoulders. Some may experience a popping sound when they chew or open and close their mouth. It can cause a person’s face to feel tired. They may experience swelling on the side of their face, have dizziness, ringing in their ears, and shoulder pain.

Receiving Help from a Good Dentist

A good dentist can help diagnose TMD in their patients. Once it has been diagnosed, the dentist will work with his patients in creating a treatment plan that aims to bring relief.
