Preparing for Dental Implants: What to Expect

Dental implant surgery is a major dental procedure, and you’d do well to adequately prepare for it beforehand. Familiarizing yourself with the procedure can help you manage your expectations, as well as improve your chances of a successful procedure:

Dental implants may require multiple surgical procedures, depending on how many implants you need. This means that a comprehensive dental exam (inclusive of procedures like dental x-rays) is a requirement.

With regards to the amount of time required for an implant placement procedure, there are various factors that will affect the length of time you’ll spend in the dental office. Some of these include the overall state of your dental health, the number and type of teeth that need replacement, and if the dentist will require you to go through tooth extraction prior to dental implant surgery. These factors also affect the number of visits you’ll have to undertake throughout the entirety of the treatment period.

You can expect a few different scenarios with an implant placement procedure. For one, depending on the thickness/softness of your jawbone, the dentist may need to perform bone grafting to make the implants work. In terms of the actual replacement teeth, you also can’t expect complete replacement mere hours into the procedure. The dentist will place the metal implant into your jawbone first, then wait for the bone to fuse with the metal. Afterwards, the dental implant will be added.
